A designathon is like a hackathon but for “CAD”ing instead of coding!

UBC Design League’s biggest event is its annual designathon competition which has 6 prompts in categories of engineering, architecture, and game development (with Unity). The prompts are made in collaboration with industry partners who customize the prompt based on what problems they’d like to see a potential intern solve. They will then review contestant resumes and also attend the event in person to see students in action and interview students that they would be interested in hiring. In addition to the industry connections and potential internship opportunities, many students also participate in the designathon to win amazing prizes, including 3D printers!

This year we're giving away 16 3D printers as well as many more prizes, free snacks and free drinks!

Last year the UBC designathon attracted 117 contestants; this year we’re expecting 200-250 students. This competition is open to all students, is free of charge, and takes place over the weekend on Feb 18-19 -from 9am on Saturday to 7:30pm on Sunday.

Designathons are hosted by design leagues across Canada -and soon across the globe! The winners of the UBC Design League (UDL) designathon are invited to the National Designathon to compete with winners from other leagues.

Designathons provide an exciting opportunity for students to get CAD experience, teamwork, and apply their knowledge to solve real industry problems crafted by us and our industry partners. Similar to hackathons, designathons are growing in popularity for their big prizes, 24 to 48 hour deadlines, and their exciting competitive environment.
